Notes: "Maxwell Davies, '57" written in pen to front wrapper. "Marienhöhe" written on title-page. PMD attended the Darmstadt Festival in 1957 as he played the piano part for a performance of his Clarinet Sonata there (Intro. to the published score). PMD in conversation with Paul Griffiths in 1980: "In those very early years...occasionally you'd hear or be able to get hold of a score of something like Boulez's Second Piano Sonata, or some of those early Nono things, or Stockhausen's Kontra-Punkte. Those pieces triggered something off: they were very liberating." (Griffiths 1981)
